Fred Schmidt is the Chairman of GreenOak Japan. Fred has oversight responsibility for GreenOak’s Asian business. He is a member of the of the firm’s investment committees globally.
Fred has spent over 29 years in the real estate industry focused on the Asia Pacific region. He was previously the President and CEO of Morgan Stanley Capital Japan and Head of Asia Investing for the Morgan Stanley Real Estate (MSRE) Funds. During his 12-year career at Morgan Stanley, Fred, together with his partners Sonny Kalsi and Marcus Merner, established investing platforms and operating companies in Japan and China and was responsible for approximately $20 billion in assets under management and over 250 employees. Fred began his real estate career with KPMG in California and Hawaii and subsequently moved to Asia to head the Japan office of Kroll Associates.
Fred served as the Vice Chairman for the Urban Land Institute (ULI) in Japan. He is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and economics. Fred was born and raised in Japan and is fluent in Japanese.
